iPhone 3.1 upgrade problems (and solutions)

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Many iPhone users have had problems after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 – some large and some small. CNET offers some solutions.

1) Reset your iPhone by holding down the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
2) Restore your iPhone: In iTunes, click the Restore button under the Summary tab. Restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos, and other data on the phone, but will restore automatically backed-up information including text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc. Of course, make sure that you back up your phone before restoring.

They also report that several bugs still persist. They include:

– Podcasts are listed in random order (Bug confirmed by Apple)
– Random freezes or shutdowns
– Crappy battery life
– Sluggish performance
– Unknown error (-50)

OS 3.1 a battery killer?

Monday, September 21st, 2009

There have been numerous reports that upgrading to the newest iPhone OS 3.1 could be a big drain on your iPhone battery.

This is from CRN.com:

Is iPhone 3.1 OS a battery buster? Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) is attempting to head off a spate of bad publicity for the iPhone 3.1 OS software update, following word among the Apple iPhone faithful that despite new and exciting features, iPhone 3.1 OS puts a severe drain on the smartphone’s battery.

That’s the word from The iPhone Blog and other sources reporting that some iPhone users have been contacted by Apple with specific questions on battery life. Apple discussion boards have been so overwhelmed with complaints, apparently, that AppleCare has also sent users a list of 11 follow-up questions, asking about everything from push e-mail to whether the battery indicator itself might be on the fritz.

The iPhone blog reports that AppleCare also included an attachment to help users log battery life — an unsigned battery life logger which syncs battery data from a user’s phone to iTunes and sends it to Apple for review.

Apple launched iPhone OS 3.1 as part of the announcements at its Sept. 8 media event in San Francisco. Available as a free download for iPhone and iPod Touch users, iPhone OS 3.1 includes a “Genius” feature — a recommendation system for Apple’s App Store — and also adds ringtones from major record labels.

Whether it’s a battery killer or not, the iPhone OS 3.1 is undoubtedly buggy and earning Apple some frustrated reaction from users. Everything Channel’s own CRN Test Center, for example, has seen a number of problems and a range of bugs that, according to Test Center Managing Editor Edward Moltzen, “are thwarting advances the company had been talking up.”

iTwinge? Seriously?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

You have to check this out. Wired thinks it may be a hoax. This is the iTwinge, due out in November. This slips over your iPhone keyboard and gives it the typing functionality of a Blackberry.

itwinge

You can better believe we filed this under “worthless iPhone accessories.” Twice.

Think about it, for $30 you really want to slide this thing on to your iPhone so you can type? And remember, when you are done typing and want to get into Safari, your iPod, Mail, phone or whatever the hell else you have at the bottom of your phone, you have to slide it off again.

Imagine sending your friend a text message after just sliding the iTwinge onto your phone (it’s something else to carry too, keep that in mind). Now you want to go to the internet. You take the iTwinge off and click on Safari. Now you need to type the address of the website you want, so you slide it back on. This sound like fun? Doesn’t to us either.

Thanks, Mobile Mechatronics!

Some iPhones get MMS early

Monday, September 14th, 2009

While the official release for iPhone MMS is still set for September 25, some users are getting access early. According to CNET,

Reports began cropping up Sunday on Twitter and later in a ZDNet article stating that some users are now able to use MMS on their iPhones. According to those who have early access, the feature hasn’t gone away yet, suggesting that it may be more than a test.

For those of us who didn’t get early access, the update will be released later this month through a software update that will be loaded when you sync your phone with iTunes.

MMS for iPhone coming September 25th

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

In a statement on their website, AT&T said that MMS will be available on the iPhone on September 25th, presumably this year.

“We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches,” it said.

“The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from day one. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end,” the company further explained.

It’s about frickin’ time. This little phone does just about everything you can imagine, yet you can’t receive video or images via text. So stupid. Tons of worthless phones can do this, but the iPhone took more than two years to have this service available. Yet another reason to hate AT&T.

Grand Theft Auto coming to iPhone

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Rockstar Games, makers of Grand Theft Auto, have announced that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be available for the iPhone and iTouch this fall.

Chinatown Wars will give users the chance to control Huang Lee, a member of the Tryiad syndicate. He travels to Liberty City to investigate the death of his father and blah blah blah.

Who cares? You just want to hire hookers then beat them up and take their money.
