iPhone 3GS Jailbreak Race Is On

Friday, June 26th, 2009

It was bound to happen. Apple releases it’s latest phone, the iPhone 3GS, and geeks everywhere begin to get all hot and bothered. A group of hackers have announced that they are hard at work at cracking the code, and the iPhone 3GS jailbreak could happen “soon.” We defer to Techtree because we don’t really know what this means…

Apple’s freshly launched iPhone 3GS has become a hackable toy for iPhone Dev team. George Hotz, the one who came out with iPhone 3G unlock, along with other mates had stated that the “24kpwn” exploit used for of iPod Touch 2G jailbreak will work for iPhone 3GS jailbreak and unlock.

The iPhone Dev team, in its blog, stated that the existing iPhone unlocking tools like redsn0w and Pwnage Tool can be used to jailbreak and unlock the new iPhone 3GS.

George Hotz, the guy who goes with user name Geohot on Twitter said:

On a personal note, I’m sad. Apple, it took me a week to break through your new defenses. And to let us reuse an exploit like that; 24kpwn was so 5 months ago. Although I imagine it must have been painful watching the devices roll by on the assembly line, knowing they all had a hole in them and you couldn’t fix it.

Wait, it still freakin’ works!

Friday, June 26th, 2009

As most of us already know, cellphones and water do not mix. I have several college friends that can attest to that after accidentally dropping their phones in a toilet after a few too many cocktails. But maybe the new iPhone 3GS has a special feature we didn’t know about: Waterproof video recording.

YouTube user KhenaKara was so excited about his new iPhone video recording he went poolside to test it out. Everything was going well until he dropped it in the water… but the thing kept recording. He said that not only was it working when he pulled it out, but it was still in perfect shape the next day.

(OK, time for a disclaimer. Don’t toss your phone in water. Don’t pretend like we said that was a good idea. Kapish?)

Apple says yes to nudity, then says no

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Apple has pulled the “Hottest Girls” app from the App Store, despite letting it get approved recently. It came with a rating that makes us think they’ll allow this stuff soon. Rated 17+ for “Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity” and “Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes.”

nudeapp

So, you have to be 17 years old to download (if it was still allowed, that is) something with naked broads. Yet, you have to be 18 to look at porn in this country (or 14 to know where your dad hides it). What sense does this make? Either way, they pulled the app.

This is what I don’t get. They won’t let apps in that are porn or naked chicks or whatever. Yet, you can log right on to Pornhub.com, which has a button at the top that says “Pornhub brings you mobile porn.” It use to say “iPhone” specifically. Just for giggles (as far as you know), I tried it once and it worked. Full on porn, right there on my phone. I could probably list 10 other sites that you can easily access and get all the nasty stuff you want right on your phone. I know because we tried when my friend first got an iPhone. We just wanted to see if it was possible. Sure enough, it was/is.

So why all the fuss about some naked chicks in an app? Moreover, why would I pay $1.99 to look at girls when I can go to one of a myriad of sites for free that are accessible through the iPhone’s Safari? No sir, I don’t get it.

Wireless charging from WildCharge

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

The biggest headache when using a mobile device is having the battery run out (losing the signal sucks too, but sometimes you didn’t feel like talking to that person anyway. And even if the signal doesn’t cut out, you can just hang up on someone any time and say “oh the call got dropped.” You can add “my battery died too” if you need to really sell the lie.)

WildCharge

So, WildCharge has a solution for your iPhone or iTouch. For $34.99 you get the skin for the phone, and for $74.99, you get the skin and the charger pad thing.

But, you’ll need both for it to work, so just getting the skin is worthless. So, the skin goes on and there is a piece that goes into your charger port, and then when you lay it on the pad, it charges. Pretty neat.

Google Wave

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Ok so check this out. We aren’t exactly sure what this new Google Wave means for iPhone application development because the programming portion of Iron Ink Media doesn’t blog and he won’t tell us why this is so great for programming. But still, this looks neat as hell and we think you should check it out.

iPhone activation server is down

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

So, I just went into my iTunes to upgrade to the much-anticipated OS 3.0 for my iPhone. I downloaded the software and was getting all excited. Then I was extracting the software to the phone and I was so close!! Then I get a message that says it can’t do it because the iPhone activation server is down. Please try again later.

That sucks! It has to be that they were not prepared for the onslaught of traffic. Hey Apple, a lot of people have iPhones now and you publicized the hell out of OS 3.0. What did you think would happen?

MMS services won’t be additional cost

Monday, June 15th, 2009

For whatever reason, the current iPhone can’t send and receive image and video text messages. The damn phone does everything else in the world, but for some reason it can’t do that. How many have you gotten that obnoxious message that sends you to some website with a password so that you can see the stupid-ass picture of your friend sitting at the ballpark. And don’t you feel like you’ve told everyone over and over again that you can. not. view. images. or. video. on. your. iPhone?

Well once the OS 3.0 software comes out (tomorrow we think it’s available), you will be able to do those things. And the best part? AT+T says that you won’t be charged extra for sending pics or video.

“Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle.”

Thanks, AT+T!!

New iPhone stencil kit

Friday, June 12th, 2009

This is great. I think Marc is going to get a new toy. Here is the iPhone stencil kit, which allows developers to sketch out their apps and get an idea for how they will look. It’s $16.95 and we think it’s great.

New iPhone unveiled

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it kicks ass. We all love it. The new iPhone 3GS is definitely worth checking out. But in addition to the new features and all that great stuff (copying and pasting as well as being able to finally send images via text), it’s only $199. Wow!

iphone3gs

And so this new one is up to 2x faster than its 3G predecessor. You can also shoot and edit video. It has a damn compass as well as GPS. It’s got voice control, a 3 mega-pixel camera and has up to 32MB of storage. I thought the initial iPhone was the equivalent of a mini-laptop, but they are just getting stupid with this thing.

Good thing too because our programmer just lost his iPhone and has to buy another one. But, he’ll have to wait until June 19th when the damn thing is available.

Also, for existing iPhone users, check out OS 3.0.

SlingPlayer for iPhone

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Ever heard of a Slingbox? It’s a thingamadoo that lets you watch your home television on your computer wherever you are. I don’t own one, but it’s pretty damn neat.

So you can guess where I’m going with this. Yep, there is now the SlingPlayer app for your iPhone and iTouch. You are now never away from your home television as long as you are with your iPhone.

slingplayer

MacWorld thinks it has some issues and is a bit pricey. And at $30, it is a bit on the high side. But my excitement isn’t so much for the current app, but what they will eventually have once they get the kinks worked out. You essentially have your home DVR with you and can watched saved programs, fast forward, pause, all of it.

Very cool, even though I’ll probably never actually get it.
