iPhone clapper?

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Meme Incorporated launched TheSnapper(tm) 1.0, a $0.99 application that lets your iPhone camera fire off when it hears snaps or claps.

Hopefully, the app is better than their press release writing. For god’s sake they have it posted with two different fonts.

According to the release, “An options page expands the set of features to include auto save of pictures, snap to save, and shouting Cheeeese instead of snapping.” Sounds pretty neat, but we aren’t sure we care enough to drop the $0.99 on it. Ah who are we kidding? We probably will.

New Category: Worthless iPhone accessories

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

I came up with a new category for the blog when I saw this. Who in the hell needs a carved hand to hold your phone? I got a great new accessory to hold my phone. It’s called a desk, and it works perfectly. I set the phone down on it, and it stays there.

But if your desk isn’t properly keeping your phone from hitting the floor, there is this.

A Plaxident Waiting to Happen

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I understand that there are endless possibilities for iPhone apps, but I can say for sure this one would never have crossed my mind. Runaway Technology’s new app, BulletFlight, is a “ballistic computer that provides quick solutions in the field.” But don’t expect to see your results in boring table form, this nifty app will “dynamically give you the solution you need now to make the shot.” Whatever that means.

Enter your type of gun, bullet, weather conditions, etc. and you will see how many clicks you need adjust to hit your target. My first thought was perhaps hunters would find this useful when it’s 4am and they’re already thinking about that night’s squirrel soup. Except, the built-in profiles are for semi-automatic precision rifles. Seriously?! Are there really enough people with those laying around the house to make the $11.99 price tag worth it?

Then again, maybe if Burress had this he would have known he needed to be four more clicks above his waistband.

CNET’s Must-Have Apps

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Rick Broida of CNET has released his latest “Six must-have iPhone freebies.” I love this for two reasons. One, I like when people recommend apps I should have because I’m often too lazy to search through a bunch. And two, they’re not just apps, they’re free apps.

1.) Mancala FS5 – I actually just downloaded this the other day. I played this game as a kid and love it. It’s easy to learn and allows you to play with others via the Internet. The games don’t take too long so it makes the perfect time filler.

2.) NPR Mobile – I’m a fan of all radio apps so I am going to be looking into this one. The search functionality lets you browse by a number of different features. It’s perfect for those long road trips where for stretches the only songs playing involve a broken heart and a pickup truck.

3.) Slacker Radio – I’m a huge Pandora fan (listening online right now) but Rick claims this is even better. Worth checking out.

4.) Sportacular – I have been searching for a truly great sports app. What I find annoying is most apps pick “favorite” teams by location. This app actually lets you designate the teams you want to follow. With scores, schedules and more, every bar should make this mandatory.

5.) Stanza – An e-book reader for the iPhone. I think there is something special about reading large hardback books, but my back begs to differ. Hauling one back and forth to work takes its toll. Now you can download books to your phone and pull from your eReader and Fictionwise libraries.

6.) Topple – I (briefly) tried Topple, but didn’t have it long enough to get hooked. I can see how it’s possible though. Stack cute little blocks as high as possible without tipping the whole thing over. It’s a game you can plan many times without getting bored. Great for the kiddies, too.

Do you agree with Rick’s list? Check them out and let us know what you think!

Gizmodo’s iPhone app list

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Gizmodo is one hell of a tech site. You should listen to everything they tell you to do, and I mean EVERYTHING. Do not question Gizmodo. If they tell you not to go to work for two weeks, you just do it. They’ll explain why later.

Ok, so anyway. Here is a list of iPhone apps they like.

Multi-Photo Email App

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

The email functionality of the iPhone is pretty good, but the one thing it’s lacking is the ability to send multiple photos in an email. With many people using their phones as their daily camera, that would definitely come in handy. That’s why Aqua Eagle has developed the “Multi-Photo Email.”

In case you couldn’t figure it out, the new app “allows you to send multiple pictures as simple email attachment through your email provider’s SMTP server.” The app can also send multiple photos to multiple email addresses. Priced at just $0.99, it’s likely to be an easy sell.Multi-Photo Email

UStream for iPhone

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Apple has just approved UStream as its live video viewing application. The new app does require an open wifi connection, so no crappy Edge network with this.

iPhone downloads continue to spike

Monday, January 19th, 2009

app_store

Apple recently announced that to date, iPhone users have downloaded a total of 500 million apps, which means that per-day downloads have nearly doubled since early December. That’s insane.

The current per-day rate is 4.76 million downloads. Again…insane for such a new product.

Apple to allow third-party web browsers for iPhone

Monday, January 19th, 2009

iphone-ie

Apple is now going to allow third-party developers to create new browsing applications for the iPhone. As it is now, you are stuck with Safari.

Some are speculating that we could see Opera and Firefox for the iPhone soon. In the last week, numerous new web browsers have gone to market including a free one called Edge. You can download it here.

The text on AppShopper.com explains Edge like this:

“See your web page or web app in a full screen Safari Browser. No loss of screen real estate to the address or navigation bars. Specify your URL with any given parameters in the iPhone settings application under Edge Browser.”

We’ll check it out and let you know.

iPhone Booster

Monday, January 19th, 2009

wilsoniboosterWilson Electronics just came out with this iPhone Booster at CES 2009.

So, I guess this hooks up to your car and utilizes an external vehicular antenna to boost your cell signal and get your through dead spots. Pretty neat. It also works with Blackberry’s but we really don’t care. We like iPhones.

There is a review here.
